(01) What is Wing Chun?

A martial art for people who can’t count on being bigger, stronger or faster.

Wing Chun is a close-range Chinese martial art. Instead of meeting force with force, it works with angles, touch and economy of movement. Three ideas carry most of it, and you will feel all three in your first class.

Structure.

Hold your shape, and the shape does the work.

Wing Chun organises the body around the centerline, the straight line between you and the person in front of you. Elbows in, hands forward, weight settled. A sound structure meets a heavier force at an angle and lets it slide past, the way a small door wedge holds a much larger door.

“Wing Chun uses ideas of angles and structure to deal with a greater force.”

Sensitivity.

Feel it before you see it.

In Chi Sau, sticking hands, partners keep their forearms in contact and learn to read pressure through touch. When pressure comes, you stay with it. When it withdraws, you follow. When the line opens, you go straight in. Reflex replaces guesswork.

“We practice repeatedly to deal with specific instances, but that is to train our instinct.”

Efficiency.

The straight line arrives first.

Wing Chun defends and attacks in the same motion and takes the shortest path to the target. It is not about being the fastest person in the room. It is about wasting nothing: no wind-up, no extra step, no second beat.

“The shortest distance between two points is a straight line.”
